Everything you need to know about the hottest piercing jewellery trend

Helix Ear Piercing - Curated Ear Look

Unless you're a starfish who has been living under a rock, no doubt you would have heard about helix piercings and the whole curated ear shabam! Even Kylie Jenner, Cardi B, Scarlett Johansson and Lily Allen are quickly embracing this new trend.

What is a helix piercing?

A helix piercing refers to ear piercings that are located anywhere on the upper ear cartilage. Its unique locations allows for both studs and captive bead rings to be worn. As for the more daring, several piercings can be tiered together (the double and triple helix) on the same ear for a more edgy vibe. The two most common areas for helix piercings are the outer helix and the forward helix.

Helix Piercing - single, double and triple stack

Pros & Cons

Pros - Similar to other cartilage piercings that are near the outer edges of the ear, helix piercings are able to wear both studs and hoops allowing for versatility. As it is a less common piercing you can express your creativity by stacking a few piercings together on your helix to achieve a truly unique look.

Cons - As with all cartilage piercings, the healing process can take slightly longer to heal. During this time the area is more vulnerable to infections and irritations depending on how well the aftercare instructions are followed. Physical activities such as swimming might also be limited due to this nature.

Pain Index

On a scale from 0 (being unicorns and rainbows) to 10 (standing on a pierce of lego barefoot) the pain would be around 4, which is lower than other cartilage piercings. This is because the outer ear curve does not have as many nerve endings. However, this will be slightly different for everyone as we have different tolerances for pain.

Sizing (gauge)

The most common size is 16 gauge (and up to 14 gauge) for helix piercings. We strongly advise you to triple check with your piercer as it will depend on the piercings you want to wear. The human body does not regenerate cartilage so plan ahead and be sure the chosen gauge is right for you. Keep in mind that during the initial healing process a stud/bar piercing is generally recommended for comfort.

The Process

1.) Firstly, take a deep breath and relax. It can get a bit nerve-wracking, but just imagine all the compliments and ear-envy that awaits you after it's done.
2.) Your ear will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
3.) The piercer will then mark the entry and exit points with a surgical marker. It is crucial for you to visually check these points yourself to make sure you are happy with the locations marked. We recommend no more than 3 piercings at once. Any more may prolong the healing process and are more vulnerable to infections.
4.) A hypodemic needle will be inserted through the cartilage and the chosen conch piercing jewellery is carefully placed into your ear, all within a couple of minutes.
5.) Brush your hear to one side and flaunt your new piercing!

Aftercare

The healing process can take from 6 to 10 months to completely heal depending on the gauge, the number of piercings and how well the aftercare is followed. During this time the initial piercing should not be changed or agitated to avoid infections and tissue damage. Clean the area twice a day using mild saline solution on non-woven gauze, applying gently to the front and back of the piercing. Ensure the area is fully dried as moisture can help bacteria grow. Some piercings may react and tarnish when in contact with liquids and cleaning solutions, for more information you can refer to our Jewellery Cleaning Guide. If you like to sleep sideways and find the piercing to be of discomfort we recommend using a travel pillow and placing the ear in the middle to avoid prolonged pressure on your ears.

rather you are thinking of getting one or wanting to add more to your curated ear collection

Curated Ear - Conch Piercing and ear studs stack

For the uninitiated, conch may sound like the name of a French pastry, but for the fashion conscious it will no doubt be ringing your curated ear alarm bells. As for the word "conch"? It is actually derived from that part of the ear which resembles the conch shell. And trust me, you will look as majestic as a mermaid once you have yours done.

What is a conch piercing?
The conch is divided into two areas: the inner conch which is suitable for most stud piercings, and the outer conch which allows for both studs and hoops. Both the inner and outer conch consists of solid cartilage so it's totally understandable if you're a little nervous about getting it pierced.

Pros & Cons
Pros - Besides looking cute AF, conch piercings are also more versatile in being able to wear both studs and hoops. Keep it low key with a minimalistic stud or combine it with your other piercings to create your own unique curated ear look.
Cons - as the piercing is through relatively thick ear cartilage the healing process will take longer than other jewellery. During this time infections and irritations can occur depending on how well the aftercare instructions are followed. Physical activities might also be limited due to this nature.

Pain Index
Ok the answer to this is a bit ambiguous as people have different tolerance to pain, But if we were to to it on a scale from 0 (being unicorns and rainbows) to 10 (standing on a piece of Lego barefoot) it would be a solid 5. No seriously, it's not much different than any other ear parts. In fact, if you already have your helix or tragus pierced, the conch will be a breeze.

Sizing (gauge)
The most common size is 16 gauge (but can be up to 14 gauge) for both the inner and outer conch.

3.) The piercer will then mark the entry and exit points with a surgical marker. It is crucial for you to visually check these points yourself to make sure you are happy with the locations marked.
4.) A hypodemic needle will be inserted through the cartilage and the chosen conch piercing jewellery is carefully placed into your ear, all within a couple of minutes.
5.) Brush your hear to one side and flaunt your new piercing!

Aftercare
The healing process can take from 6 to 10 months to completely heal depending on the gauge and how well the aftercare is followed. During this time the initial piercing should not be changed or agitated to avoid infections. Clean the area twice a day and remove any discharge that may appear. Some piercings may react and tarnish when in contact with liquids and cleaning solutions, for more information you can refer to our Jewellery Cleaning Guide. Keep dry and avoid contact with chemicals and don't forget to ask your piercer for recommendations on cleaning products.

(literally - with piercings)

No doubt you've heard this term buzzing around lately, as celebs and the fashion conscious are embracing the styling. This involves stacking an assortment of piercings onto the ear using a variety of studs, huggie hoops and bars. All the piercings are usually done in one sitting and the more ear bling the better!

A curation should be unique and personalised according to the wearer. Things to consider include the wearer's ear shape, lifestyle (as physical activities or the need to wear headphones and other factors can influence the type of styling) and pre-existing piercings.

The curated ear is for women who wants to express their individuality. It's about breaking all the rules you know about ear piercing. Embrace asymmetry and mismatched earrings. Combo different shapes, colours and materials to create your very own look.

Whether you're wanting to take some baby steps towards your dream curated ear vibe or aiming to completely crush the curation game at once, here are some inspirations and styling tips.

Word of advice - this isn't for the faint hearted. These piercings hurt, especially if you're piercing through cartilage. The results however are worth 10X the pain (unlike my past relationships).

Tragus
Refers to the bump directly in front of the ear canal. This is one of the most popular and versatile spots for a piercing as it can suit both studs and hoops. As it is relatively out of the way (less likely to snag onto your hair or earphone cables etc) it's also perfect for daily wear.

tragus and cartilage piercings

Helixes
Add a hoop (or hoops) to your helix/forward helix (the upper cartilage of the ear) for an edgy finish to your ear curation. Stack multiple hoops and combi it with dangly lobe piercings for a look bad girl Riri would approve.

helix piercings

Conch and daith
A conch ring which wraps around the outer ear can add a minimal but impactful statement. It works well as a standalone piercing and even better stacked! The daith refers to the inner ear cartilage which is suitable for hoops and banana bars. Check out our article about daith piercing and migraines here.

Spice things up with a cuff
Commitment issues? Avoid getting fomo with our ear cuffs to spice up your curation game. They simply clip onto your outer ear without the need for piercing. Combi this with some simple studs along your lower and upper lobe and a pair of statement earrings to own the curated ear trend. Easy!

Face it, diamonds are not really forever. All metals and gems age and that's an undeniable fact. They will eventually wear, tarnish or oxidise. But with good maintenance and care we can dramatically slow that process down so they can age gracefully like J-Lo.

General:
We recommend cleaning your jewels once per month, but if you're half as lazy as me that's never going to happen until absolutely necessary. For general cleaning simply add a generous amount of detergent or anti bacterial soap into a bowl of warm water. Soak your jewellery in the mixture for up to 15 minutes before gently scrubbing away any built-up dirt using a toothbrush, making sure to clean any crevices thoroughly . Dab with a clean cloth to dry. Easy!

Note: this method is not suitable for moonstone, opal gems or any jewellery that uses glue.

Sterling Silver:
Oxygen is bad for your health... if you're made of silver. There are multiple reasons why silver can tarnish and turn black. Chemical reaction to moisture, skin acids, oxygen, sulfur and hydrogen (which can be found in food items and everyday products, even polluted air) just to name a few causes. 2-3% of people have skin chemistry that can also react to the alloys in sterling silver causing discolouration.
Plain silver pieces can be cleaned using a silver dip solution. This method is only suitable if the piece is entirely silver (without decorative gems or other materials). Alternatively a polishing cloth works wonders and can instantly return the shine to your bling.

Gold:
Gold can be cleaned using the "general cleaning" instructions above. Alternatively you can take it to your local jeweller to have it professional cleaned using ultrasonic cleaner or gold cleaning solutions.

Plated jewellery:
It might be tempting to use a polishing cloth to bring back the shine, but please don't. The polishing compounds in the cloth can be abrasive and wear away the plating. Instead opt for a soft non-polishing cloth to remove any dirt. A gentle touch is key.

Mistakes to avoid:
these mistakes are made way too often, so a bit of a heads up for what not to do

1.) Using saline solution to clean stainless steel - saline contains salt which is corrosive and can significantly damage jewellery. If you're using saline solution to clean fresh body piercings make sure you dry yourself before reinserting any jewellery to avoid contact.

2.) Swimming with it on in sea water - Same as above. Salt hates jewellery. Chlorine in pools can also wreak havoc on gold jewellery so prolong contact should definitely be avoided.

3.) Showering with you jewellery - Although the occasional shower or dip in the pool with your jewellery is fine it's not a good to make it a habit. Steam and hot water can loosen the glue that holds the pieces together and constant contact with water can cause erosion and rusting depending on the metal.

4.) Using toothpaste to clean jewellery - toothpaste is slightly abrasive and can leave micro scratches to soft metals and platings

5.) Using alcohol as cleaning agent - there's a myth that alcohol and lemon juice are good cleaning agents for jewellery. Myth busted. These solutions are too harsh and can damage porous gem stones like opal and emerald and can corrode metals.

6.) Exposure to beauty products - hand lotion, hairspray and perfume can be devastating to jewellery. Remove any jewellery before applying products to minimise the exposure.

7.) Ultrasonic cleaners - the aggressive vibration of an ultrasonic cleaner can create fractures in softer gems and loosen jewellery that are made from different pieces. It's best to consult a professional jeweller before using this method.

8.) Wearing fine jewellery to bed - as you toss and turn in bed delicate jewellery can get caught on blankets and sheets causing bends and breaking. It's best practice to take off any jewellery before you catch some Zzzzzz's.

It's a hard life being a piece of jewellery. You're exposed to many elements which can harm your shine. Our best advice is to more mindful of it. To avoid damage and needing to clean your jewellery often, remove them before doing any intense activities like working out or sports so they don't get exposed to sweat, body oils and physical wear and tear.

Migraines are no joke. Affecting around 1 in 7 people the disease causes a throbbing sensation to the front or side of the head which can last for hours and up to days.... It can also cause increased sensitivity to light, nausea, blind spots and tingling in the limbs.

But there seems to be a growing trend for sufferers to combat this blasted awful pain in the head, by using a daith piercing to replicate the effects of acupuncture. Too good to be true? We decided to put on our Sherlock hats and investigate.

The Cause & The Cure

First of all let's get things straight. There is no absolute "cure" for migraines. In fact, doctors are not even 100% sure what happens within our bodies during these attacks. Currently some of the most effective ways to mitigate the symptoms comes from alternative management tools such as stress-relief, diet and acupuncture.

Daith Piercing

The daith cartilage is located in the inner ear. It has long been a location targeted by acupuncturists to help leviate headaches. It works by stimulating nerves under the skin and muscle, resulting in the body to produce natural pain-relieving substances such as endorphins.

Cut the bull, does it actually work? Although there are no concrete scientific evidence between daith piercing and migraine relief, many sufferers who are using the piercing as a long term acupuncture solution to manage their pain have come forward to share its benefits. They have reported a drop in both the frequency and the intensity of attacks.

However, what works for some may not work for others as shown by an anonymous survey conducted by Carl Cincinato at MigrainePal. Of the 380 surveyees who tried daith piercing for the treatment of migraines, 47% found it beneficial while 48% found the frequency of migraines remained the same. Talk about 50/50....

Conclusion

If you're all out of options we think the daith piercing method is definitely worth a try. Beating migraine and gaining a cute AF piercing at the same time? Yes please! However, we recommend you to do some Sherlocking of your own before jumping the gun as there are pros and cons that need to be weighed according to the individual.
